Great blog Naomi ! love your honesty and transparency. So great to know that all people go through the same introspective evaluation. You are amazing and you always have me awed with the way you re-invent yourself. Glad to know things are going so well... and that things will get even better still in the areas that aren't because as we know... there is only success and feedback. Once again - Thanks for sharing. Your courage to do this in a public space is awesome.

HI Sam

Thank you for your comment... it's nice to connect through my blog as well as on Twitter.

I completely agree... flexibility is key - but more than that - really having an in depth understanding ofd your staff and how they work best will allow for the flexibility to work in everyones favour.

As you are aware.. I am a big fan of The Coffice - I work from my favourite cafe every Wednesday - but if I was to look at myself even 6 years ago - I think I would have taken advantage of my employer allowing me to work from home... for me I have grown into a new professional that understands that it is a privilege and not a right to work from home. If we can get that message across to the public I think employers would be more readily willing to allow teleworking policies... but again - working with the individuals is a must.

Loving the interaction Sam... Thank you

Cheers

HI Carole

Thanks for your comment. My "problem" isn't actually with the idea of WFH or even NBN - the challenge I see is the Gillard Government using teleworking as a facade to avoid talking about the massive cost for NBN. I believe in the NBN - just not how it have been executed.

As for working from home... you are absolutely right... it works for some industries - my point is that in a company such as mine where collaboration is vital to the successes of our customers - we need to be here.

Let me give you an example. We are currently working on a launch for a new mobile application for a customer. He wants a full multi-faceted marketing approach... this means that the graphic designers, marketing strategist, marketing coordinators, copywriters, multimedia specialist and marketing interns are all involved. If we were all working remotely - the amazing ideas that play to the strengths of these amazing individuals simply wouldn't happen. So as my blog stated - I am not against teleworking, nor NBN - I am simply saying that there needs to be more thought around it - and not a 12% blanket metric.

It sounds like your employer has worked with you on an individual teleworking policy - which is fantastic... that's what I believe in :)

Thank you again for your comment... it's always nice to see a new follower

Cheers

Naomi: You bring up many good, relevant and extremely important points for consideration when it comes to working remotely...most of which require more in-depth knowledge of Nexus CG.

Alternatively, I'll offer this: teleworking, telecommuting, workshifting, no matter how you package and brand it or where you choose to do it, isn't for everyone. The same can be said for working in a downtown, glassed-in cubicle farm.

One thing is certain -- unless someone pulls the plug on the world, the global workforce is changing how business is done, and how many of them are doing it that way. One report forecasts the number to be 1.3 billion by 2015.

As an employer, as your blog post suggests, I feel it's more important to embrace flexibility, and keep asking the right questions to ensure you're helping your teams meet (and exceed) their goals as a whole and collectively as Nexus CG.

I dont understand your problem ? WFH teleworking whatever you / her / they want to call it has been around as you've said for years. And as you've said it needs to be worked out between the individual and their employer. Expectations set etc. I currently work from home 2 days a week and I find the response times on some days extremely frustrating. I hoping that with this new "network" we WILL see an improvement. At the moment for those of us well me anyway that do WFH and don't need colleagues to be inspired its sometimes a very very hard to resist the urge to throw that modem out the door !

Hello, Naomi! What a nice story:-) I'm sure that such approach will help this speaker to sell some products but only once.
